Ongoing - Citizen Science: Bird Monitor Category Citizen Science Description Join our Citizen Science team as a bird monitor! Bird monitors help CCPR obtain long-term monitoring data of bird populations in our parks and greenways. As a bird monitor, you will identify birds by sight and record data using the leading citizen science smartphone app for birds, eBird. eBird is out of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and allows your data to be used not only by CCPR, but at a national level. The data you collect will benefit both CCPR and the birds you are observing. To be a successful bird monitoring volunteer, you need to have a love for nature, a passion for learning, and the time to devote to this program. This program is ideally intended for those with prior birding experience. All new volunteers must complete the pre-requisite class and field training with staff. Ongoing - Citizen Science: Bluebird Monitor Category Citizen Science Description Join our Citizen Science team as a bluebird monitor! Bluebird monitoring is way for our parks to keep track of the Eastern bluebird population that once experienced record lows due to environmental and land use changes. Luckily, populations have rebounded, but we still want to keep monitoring a priority. The data you collect by monitoring the bluebird boxes in our parks will benefit both CCPR and the Eastern bluebirds you observe. To be a successful bird monitoring volunteer, you need to have a love for nature, a passion for learning, and the time to devote to this program. Monitors are required to collect data a minimum of 3 hours/month and must submit data within two days of the monitoring date. Frogs and toads are important pieces of our local biodiversity. They are ecological indicator species and are exceptionally sensitive to pollution. By monitoring the populations of frogs and toads in our parks, we have a better understanding of what is happening in our waterways. To be a successful Frog Watch volunteer, you need to have a love for nature, a passion for learning, and the time to devote to this program. Monitors are required to collect data a minimum of 2 hours/month during the months of February to August and must submit data within two days of the monitoring date. Ongoing - Citizen Science: Invasive Plant Monitor Category Citizen Science Description Join our Citizen Science team as an invasive plant monitor! Invasive plant monitoring is vital to the long-term health and sustainability of not only our parks, but all natural area. Invasive species are one of the biggest threats to biodiversity loss and we need your help monitoring invasive plants in our parks to stop the spread. As an invasive plant monitor, you will identify invasive plants in our parks and map their locations using your smartphone. These areas that are mapped will be used by our staff for long-term management, including eradication of the invasives. Ongoing - Citizen Science: Native Plant Monitor Category Citizen Science Description Join our Citizen Science team as a native plant monitor! Native Plant monitors help collect long-term monitoring data about native plant species in the parks. Monitoring is based on habitat type, with our main habitats being forest, wetland, and prairie. As a native plant monitor you will identify planting using iNaturalist, a smartphone application. This app allows you to take multiple photos of the plant, geotag its location, and provide any notes or comments you have. This keeps a valuable photographic and geographic record of the plants that you monitor for years to come. To be a successful native plant monitor, you need to have a love for nature, a passion for learning, and an interest in native plants. This program is ideally designed for volunteers who have previous experience in native plant ID. All new volunteers must complete the pre-requisite class and field training with staff. Ongoing - Homework Helper Volunteer Category Extended School Enrichment Description Volunteer Responsibilities: Assist students (K-5) with homework during their designated work time Check students’ homework for completion Requirements Volunteer must be at least 16 years old. Volunteers that are 18 years or older must complete and pass a background check. Volunteers under 18 must provide 2 references to be contacted by CCPR. Volunteers in this role should be comfortable working with children. Desired Skills/Qualifications Some fluency in Spanish is desired, but not required. Time Commitment & Scheduling Volunteer shifts will fall within the timeframe of 3-4:30pm on weekdays, but the number of days and frequency of volunteer shifts is up to you and the Site Supervisor. Volunteers will be briefed and trained by an ESE staff member before beginning Ongoing - Individual Service Project Category Park Stewardship & Nature Education Description This project is set aside for separate projects that do not fall into any other categories. These projects must first be approved by the Volunteer Coordinator or Natural Resources Coordinator. Ongoing - Recess Monitor Volunteer Category Extended School Enrichment Description Volunteer Responsibilities: Assist ESE staff with monitoring students during recess Requirements Volunteer must be at least 16 years old. Volunteers that are 18 years or older must complete and pass a background check. Volunteers under 18 must provide 2 references to be contacted by CCPR.
